What is the real impact of social media on appearance?

Social media has become a driving force in many people's lives, almost inescapable in some respects. With the surge of mobile devices such as tablets and seemingly smarter-than-smart phones, many are connected to their social media presence at all times. How can this affect life decisions?

"Getting many 'likes'may increase a person's confidence."

According to a recent RealSelf surgery, 50 percent of respondents said their decision to undergo a plastic surgery procedure was based on social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram. In particular, selfies are driving this craze forward, with many focusing heavily on the pictures they post and the responses they garner from peers. Getting many "likes" may increase a person's confidence or self esteem.

For some though, a lack of "likes" or social media presence can actually spur them to make a greater life change, resulting in a plastic surgery procedure.

As plastic surgery has become increasingly popular, with cosmetic procedures having increased by 115 percent since 2000, more and more people are looking to surgery as a real change, a chance to achieve a look they have always desired.

"Patients have more options than ever, and working closely with their surgeon, they're able to focus on specific target areas of the body to achieve the look they desire," said American Society of Plastic Surgeons'Dr. David H. Song.

Although social media may play a large role in how people feel about themselves, it should never be the only reason why someone decides to undergo a plastic surgery treatment. Plastic surgery is a life changing experience, one that should be considered with other factors in mind as well such as overall health and wellness, medical conditions, previous surgeries and realistic goals.
