How can you treat your acne scars?
Acne is not just a teenage and young adult phenomenon. Adult onset acne can occur in men and women between the ages
of 30 and 50, and is most common in women going through menopause.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, this kind of acne can be caused by a range of factors, including:
- Family history: Some people are born with a predisposition for acne. If a relative such as a
sibling or parent has severe acne, you may suffer from it as well.
- Fluctuating hormone levels: Hormone fluctuations due to pregnancy, monthly period or taking
birth control can lead to a chemical imbalance. These chemical imbalances commonly factor into acne outbreaks.
- Hair and skin products: The hair and skin care products you use daily can have a big impact on
your face. Always look for oil-free or non-acnegenic on new products used near the face.
- Medication side effects: Acne can be a side effect of some medicines. If you believe your
medication is causing the issue, talk to your doctor before stopping the dosage.
- Stress: Numerous studies have indicated that stress is related to acne breakouts. When
stressed, our bodies produce more androgens (a type of hormone) that stimulates oil glands and hair follicles in
the skin.
In addition to these factors, simply touching your face with dirty hands can cause breakouts. Trytoavoid touching
your face throughout your work day, and especially on your commute home.
Marotta Facial Plastic Surgery understands that acne scarring is just as common as acne itself. Scarring and
hyperpigmentation can be corrected and treated with a range of procedures, including:
- Chemical peels

- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
- Laser treatments
- Microdermabrasion
- Punch grafting

- Subcision.
Determining which treatment will be most effective depends on multiple factors including severity of scarring,
tendency of future scarring, hormonal status and age.
