Consider skin resurfacing procedures if you're looking to remove dark spots, wrinkles or acne scars from your complexion.

Should you be considering skin resurfacing procedures?

Skin resurfacing options like dermabrasion and laser resurfacing remove the top layers of skin and stimulate collagen growth to smooth flaws and promote a youthful, beautiful appearance. Dermabrasion utilizes a rotating diamond burr, rather than lasers, to precisely take away damaged skin.

Here are some of the problems skin resurfacing procedures can address:

  • Acne scarring and pockmarks
  • Fine lines and wrinkles on the cheeks and face
  • Liver spots, age spots and sun-damaged skin
  • Pigmented areas and uneven skin tone
  • Scarring from an injury or accident
  • Wrinkles around the mouth, commonly referred to as "lipstick lines"
  • Wrinkles around the eyes, commonly referred to as "crow's feet"

Patients can receive resurfacing procedures under local anesthetic in a doctor's office, and after the resurfacing is completed a protective gel dressing will be immediately applied to calm skin and encourage new, healthy growth. A new layer of skin on your face will then grow after about 10 days, although you may experience some redness for a longer period of time. The results of resurfacing procedures can be seen up to a year afterward, because the new collagen will continue to fill in wrinkles.

After a procedure, you'll want to take care of your new skin to retain the beautiful tone and texture you've achieved. New sun damage will reverse the effects of the work, so be careful about protecting your skin.
